Brussels, which is a thousand-year-old capital of Belgium, has grown enormously and
intertwines politics, business and culture. With its educated and multi-lingual
leaders, Brussels opens its arms out to new businesses and foreign investors. Right
now American companies represent the largest concentration here. Though English is
common here, French and Flemish are Brussels official language, And one important
characteristic to recognize is that what we Americans find as confidence, the
Europeans tend to find that it is seen as being conceded or arrogant and this is
something we need to be aware of because it can be quite challenging. Here things
are done at a much slower pace and though relationship-building is important, here
it is separate from getting personal. Here work is taken much more seriously, there
is no such thing as casual Fridays and 20 vacation day minimum per year is law here
at Brussels. As long as you are patient you won’t have a problem in this flexible
multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment. There are a number of wonderful places
to check out in Brussels. Stockels has wonderful fresh produce, waffles and a number
of restaurants and shops. For the best selection of wine and saffron, go to Place du
Chatelaine on Wednesday afternoons. The town hall and golden guild houses at the
Grand-Place with its surrounding shops make you feel like you’re in a different
place. On Sundays hit one of the largest open-air markets in Europe, the Garedy
Midi, its thriving with people and has over 400 stands. Place du Jeu de balle is a
daily flea market and one of the few open on Sundays. Its located in the city’s
oldest working-class quarter, Marolles. One of the most beautiful spots to hit in
Brussels on the weekends is the Grand Sablon, just an amazing antiques market worth
checking out. And if you love chocolates and cookies, you are in for a treat here. A
found spot here is the Biscuiterie Dandoy which is famous for its Belgian spicy
cookies. One of the great things about this compact city is that it has a number of
larger-than-life character works of art displayed throughout the city. Making it
ideal and pleasant for taking nice walks and guided tours. With over 2,000
restaurants, beer bars and its famous Friteries (French-fry stands) Brussels is a
great place for the food lover.
