St. Petersburgh

This investor friendly city and former capital in Russia is a major business center. It is the sixth largest city in Europe by population. Founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter, with intentions on providing this country with maritime trading center that rivaled Amsterdam, it also has a thriving auto plant industry. And the amazing architecture here is evident of the success this city has had for many years. Russians are known to make deals and do business over lunch and even dinner. Business was usually done over large consumptions of vodka but the drinking here has calmed down a lot. Because of the northern climate the winters are dark and the summer days are long, it isn’t unusual for client to be one hour late. Being 10-15 minutes late isn’t even considered being late so be prepared to wait. Russia has made so many advances bin the business culture since the Soviet Union fall. Specifically St. Petersburgh, this city has been through a lot and though good accountants and lawyers and a number of great serves are available it’s an expensive place. Though this city had a reputation of being the capital of crime in the early 1990’s, it’s crime rate has gone dramatically down and now even though you can walk anywhere at anytime the only thing that might happen would be that occasional pick pocket. The atmosphere here now is very pleasant and has improved over the years and the government has helped to make St. Petersburgh a pleasure to do business with. Because of its amazing historic architecture and its wealth of museums St. Petersburgh is referred to by locals as a “Museum under the open sky” or a “city museum”. Here you will find the world’s largest and oldest museum, the State Hermitage Museum, founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great. Included here is the former home of the Russian Tsars, and the Winter Palace and five buildings on the palace embankment.

India’s capital New Delhi, had been a quiet place in the 1980’s but after the 1990’s
since the financial reform, this city is now thriving and busy. With a 9% growth for
the last several fiscal years, its government welcomes foreign investments. So this
is a great place for an executive to visit. In this city rich with history, rulers
have chosen Delhi as their capital nine times with their governments based here for
a very long time. Because of its ranking in the world, there is a lot of red tape,
permissions and approvals to get thru in order to get the things done, where
normally it would not be a problem. And even with all of the fancy titles, when
dealing with traditional Indian business houses you still need to go thru the red
tape and get everything authorized. Here they take their time to get things done so
you need to be patient. Interacting is also very important and can make a huge
difference, so if you are asked for tea or dinner, be sure to accept the invitation,
it will make a world of difference in the end. There is a lot to see here in New
Delhi. To get the best views take a ride on the Connaught Place Station, enjoy the
air conditioning on this seven year old Metro. You will pass thru beautiful
tree-lined avenues and 20th century British built bungalows. From your
Japanese-branded coach, just a few stops later you will see 17th century old Delhi
walled city. Here there are silver shops, fresh baked flatbread and open-air
butchers as you walk thru the busy streets and alleys. Taking all of this in, you
feel as if you have spanned several hundred years. For a quieter experience enjoy a
lush green park with 15th century ruins called the Lodhi Gardens on Lodhi Road. Here
you will also find mausoleum built for Humayun’s tomb, a Mughal ruler in the 16th
century which is near the Oberoi Hotel.

Brussels, which is a thousand-year-old capital of Belgium, has grown enormously and
intertwines politics, business and culture. With its educated and multi-lingual
leaders, Brussels opens its arms out to new businesses and foreign investors. Right
now American companies represent the largest concentration here. Though English is
common here, French and Flemish are Brussels official language, And one important
characteristic to recognize is that what we Americans find as confidence, the
Europeans tend to find that it is seen as being conceded or arrogant and this is
something we need to be aware of because it can be quite challenging. Here things
are done at a much slower pace and though relationship-building is important, here
it is separate from getting personal. Here work is taken much more seriously, there
is no such thing as casual Fridays and 20 vacation day minimum per year is law here
at Brussels. As long as you are patient you won’t have a problem in this flexible
multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment. There are a number of wonderful places
to check out in Brussels. Stockels has wonderful fresh produce, waffles and a number
of restaurants and shops. For the best selection of wine and saffron, go to Place du
Chatelaine on Wednesday afternoons. The town hall and golden guild houses at the
Grand-Place with its surrounding shops make you feel like you’re in a different
place. On Sundays hit one of the largest open-air markets in Europe, the Garedy
Midi, its thriving with people and has over 400 stands. Place du Jeu de balle is a
daily flea market and one of the few open on Sundays. Its located in the city’s
oldest working-class quarter, Marolles. One of the most beautiful spots to hit in
Brussels on the weekends is the Grand Sablon, just an amazing antiques market worth
checking out. And if you love chocolates and cookies, you are in for a treat here. A
found spot here is the Biscuiterie Dandoy which is famous for its Belgian spicy
cookies. One of the great things about this compact city is that it has a number of
larger-than-life character works of art displayed throughout the city. Making it
ideal and pleasant for taking nice walks and guided tours. With over 2,000
restaurants, beer bars and its famous Friteries (French-fry stands) Brussels is a
great place for the food lover.

With Rio de Janeiro’s amazing images, Christ on the mountaintop, the sugarloaf, and
the Ipanema Beach, its something out of the “Blame it on Rio” movie. This beachy
city is an energetic and vigorous place to do business. Brazil’s second largest
metropolitan area, second only to rival Sao Paulo, is a major business town. It’s
strength is not only in the tourism but also in mining, oil service companies, and
metals and steel. It also has the nations powerful energy sector and the
headquarters of global mining giant Vale. And Cariocas is where television, film and
media productions are located. Before doing any kind of business here, you need to
win the confidence of your partner. Because of this business transactions can take
many years so you need to be patient. Doing business with someone unworthy is not
how it is done here. Your first meeting should just be about what your company has
to offer and become friendly and familiar with your potential partner. There an
arrogant move would be to ask the price of something in the beginning. Your goal at
your first meeting is to be friendly and seek confidence. Following up and going to
lunch, a barbecue or a boat tour is a common way of getting to know each other. Once
you have gotten to the third meeting you can safely bring up numbers. Once you have
a relationship with Brazilians keeping the same negotiating team in place is
essential to keeping this business deal in tack. Body language here in Rio de
Janeiro is very different. The workplace dress, especially for women is very
different in Carioca, here women can dress openly sexy but this should never be a
way of judging their professionalism. In this Latin city affection and touch are
very common and means that one is trusting of you, which can create a long-term
business relationship. When you are done with business for the day, there are a
number of things to enjoy and to do here. The beach is the most common place.
Ipanema, Copacabana, Sao Conrado, Barra and the isolated Grumari beachare all spots
where you can enjoy yourself. If you are up for something a little more adventurous
try hiking on trails at the Tijuca forest located in one of the worlds largest
Atlantic rainforests. Also kayaking at Guanabara Bay is something you would not want
to miss. Hang gliding at Pedra Bonita (Rock of Beauty) using hang-gliding pilots
from the company Just Fly, a tram ride on the Corovado or a cable car up the
Sugarloaf. Enjoy all of the cafes and small bars in downtown, the old Paco Imperial,
Arco de Teles at the old Imperial Palace are worth seeing as well and of course your
visit would not be complete unless you enjoy some music and dancing in Lapa.
